Judges steal a child from Native American parents. No Parental Rights Here!

To the Editors,
It’s a pity that little Veronica Brown won’t be allowed to grow up with
her natural father around. The Associated Press reported today (9/24)
that the Oklahoma supreme court had relinquished jurisdiction of the
custody case.
That means that a lower court ruling, from South Carolina, following a
Supreme Court ruling that violated federal law, would be left to stand.
The AP report identifies the Capobianco family as Veronica’s family, but
they are not. They are her surrogate family, foster family, adoptive
family. The courts rulings disfavored her natural family. Not that the
natural father had abandoned her or abused her, or neglected her. He, as
any concerned father would do, fought for his rights to be a parent to
his daughter from the very beginning. He was thwarted from her birth by
the courts, who apparently preferred a wealthy white family, rather than
the child’s natural father and birthright culture. Indeed, there is a
federal law which requires that children of Native American heritage be
brought up within that culture whenever possible. The law was intended
to protect the integrity of the Native American nations. To deny the
natural father his right to be a parent, the courts unanimously violated
that law.
It may be redundant, but we repeat: The father had done nothing wrong.
He was a concerned father, and stood up to protect and provide for his
daughter from the earliest moment. The tribal nation supported his
fatherhood claims. The courts were apparently intent on denying a
father custody. The South Carolina courts stand to profit from
collecting child support from him, now that his rights have been
torpedoed. And that’s what fathers across the nation have been
conditioned to expect. Dustin Brown not only lost his daughter, but will
most likely be forced to pay for the privilege, and to add insult to
injury, is facing extradition on a charge of custodial interference.
That should serve as a good deterrent to other fathers who believe they
have a right to be parents to their children.
